Breaking News! Happy Birthday for New Orleans Jazz Band by Robert Hughes has been added to the Cabrillo Music Festival’s “On Freedom” concert to celebrate America’s 250^th on Friday, July 31st at 8 pm. The program order is:

Vivian Fung’s America the Beautiful?, Pedro Emanuel Pereira’s Clarinet Concerto (Carlos Ferreira, Clarinet), Hughes’ Happy Birthday and Philip Glass’ Symphony No. 15 Lincoln (Zachary James, Baritone).

Rehearsal for Happy Birthday (yes, this work for virtuosi needs rehearsal) is open to the public and online, Tuesday, July 28 during the 10 am to 12:30 pm rehearsal. Tune in around noon or 12:15 pm.

Happy Birthday for New Orleans Jazz Band is excerpted from the film score for That’s Me, which Hughes composed in 1965 to accompany a film designed to help children identify themselves in the larger world they have newly entered. The film was produced by Amazing Life Games Films, directed by Jim Robertson, former head of Design at the San Francisco Art Institute. Hughes was a member of the core creative team.
