Homage to Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Homage to Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Violin, Cello, Piano, and Narrator

Saint-Exupery's plane was lost over the Mediterranean in 1944 and one would guess that he died as he lived, full of passion for each moment.

This 3-movement work composed in 1992 is the first in which the composer integrated spoken words with music. The work was dedicated to the Merling Trio and performed by them on a self-produced CD with Von Washington narrating. It was later performed by faculty members at Franklin and Marshall College and Lynn University.

Composer's Note From CD Recording:

"Saint-Exupery's Wind, Sand, and Stars, is ostensibly about his experiences as a pilot, his love of flying and his fascination with the people and cultures with whom he came in contact but metaphors of life and death are found throughout. One can simply turn the pages without concern for continuity, and discover thoughts and images of stunning intensity. The words in this piece are mostly his but have been lifted and joined with words of my own. During the many months spent composing this piece, I lost track of which words are his and which may have come from me."
