Leo Kraft b.1922 (Brooklyn) is an American composer, author, and educator.
He holds degrees from Queens College (CUNY) and Princeton University. He studied composition with Karol Rathaus, Randall Thompson, and Nadia Boulanger, and taught at Queens College for many years. Retired from teaching, Leo continues to compose and to inspire everyone who is fortunate enough to know him and work with him.
The American Society for Jewish Music and The American Jewish Historical Society present The Leo Kraft 90th Birthday Concert, at the Center for Jewish History, featuring some of New Yorks finest chamber music players, including flutist Patricia Spencer, clarinetists Charles Neidich and Ayako Oshima, violinist Renee Jolles, violist Mark Halloway, and cellist Marcy Rosen, as well as pianist Morey Ritt, who will premiere Testimonium, a new work Kraft has written for her.
Among the works on the program is Krafts Seven Hebrew Songs, to poems by medieval Hebrew poets, sung by the American baritone Thomas Meglioranza, with David Jolley, horn and Konstantza Chernov, piano.
Hailed by The Boston Globe for his vocal distinction and expressive warmth, Meglioranza is one of this countrys most sought-after and unique young singers.
The program will conclude with Kraft's Omaggio, a quintet in memory of Primo Levi.
