Bass-clarinetist Harry Sparnaay has completed a book for composers covering a wide range of issues concerning multi-phonic sonorities and other interesting experimental sounds of the harmonic spectrum of the instrument. It's 260 pages, printed on archival paper, and includes a
CD, that "gives the composer the ability to listen and understand the way in which such sounding "effects" can be rationally performed in the best possible way." --Stylianos Dimou composer
Mexican composer, Ana Lara, says that it is Sparnaay who convinced her that the bass clarinet is "a great instrument capable of doing everything imaginable and unimaginable and has created a very extensive repertoire. He is the great master of the bass clarinet. Sparnaay inspired a new generation of great bass clarinetists"
Available in both English and Spanish, the book/CD is available from Periferia Music. Sparnaay plans to perform John Eaton's "Footnotes" for two bass clarinets tuned 1/4 tone apart, with various bass clarinetists in the upcoming season.
