Classical music writer and radio host Walter Carroll announces New England Public Radio (NEPR.net) will be wishing a happy birthday (87th) to Amherst emeritus composer Dr. Frederick C. Tillis on Thursday afternoon, January 5th, with a performance of Tillis' Niger Symphony (at about 2:55pm EST) and Motherless Child - Spiritual Fantasy No. 1 (at about 3:13pm). In addition, Tillis' groundbreaking choral work from 1968, Freedom (In Memory of Dr. Martin Luther King), for SATB and recorded by the University of MassachusettsChorale Singers, Richard du Bois, conductor, will be played on NEPR radio on the upcoming birthday observance of Dr. King, on January 16th.
