From 1953 to 1958 he wrote \u003ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003eIncidental Music for Aria da Capo\u003c\/i\u003e by Edna St. Vincent Millay; \u003ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003eSix Characters in Search of an Author\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eby Luigi Pirandello; and \u003ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003eThe Second Shepherd’s Play, a Medieval Drama\u003c\/i\u003e. These scores are now lost. \u003ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003eIncidental Music for Waltz of the Toreadors\u003c\/i\u003e, however, survived. It was one of the composer’s last compositions before leaving for Europe to study dodecaphonic music with Luigi Dallapiccola. It showcases the composer’s flair for melody and his talent for creating “sticky tunes” that are difficult to get out of mind. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"\u003eThe occasion was the University’s production of Jean Anouilh’s play from 1951. Its Broadway run in New York directed by Harold Clurman in 1957 and 1958 was wildly successful, receiving five Tony Award nominations and a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"\u003eMusic for the University production was conducted by the composer, and played by James Pyne and Samuel Costello, clarinets; Frank Collura and Clifford Shisler, trumpets; Angelo Di Mino, percussion; Leonard Banaszak, guitar; Daniel Palazzo, double bass; and Donald Shrimpton, piano.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: normal;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"\u003eWhen he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to study with Lou Harrison he returned to melodic invention. He revised \u003ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003eAria da Capo\u003c\/i\u003e and composed \u003ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003eIncidental Music for Waiting for Godot\u003c\/i\u003e by Samuel Beckett for the Sticky Wicket summer drama series in Aptos, CA. His\u003ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003e Incidental Music for The Glass Menagerie\u003c\/i\u003e,\u003ci style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"\u003e \u003c\/i\u003eby Tennessee Williams accompanied an Oakland CA production.
