Composer's Note:

Once again . . . (2020) for solo alto saxophone was written at the request of Professor James Bishop, one of the many students of Dr. Frederick L. Hemke of Northwestern University. Fred loved the music of Gustav Mahler and arranged one of Mahler’s famous “Rückert Songs” for alto saxophone and piano, Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen (“I have lost touch with the world”). Professor Bishop asked for this simple Hemke tribute with a nod to the Mahler which was one of Fred’s favorites. John Sampen and Marilyn Shrude premiered Once again . . . at the Frederick L. Hemke Saxophone Institute at Snow Pond in Sydney, Maine on June 18, 2021. After presenting the saxophone solo, the final measures of Hemke’s arrangement were added as a postscript.
