Description

Composer's Note:

Saraswati for violoncello solo and violin ensemble was written for Jennifer Son. She has been involved with the Con Brio festival based at the prestigious National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai for the past several years. Jennifer requested a new work that would allow her to perform with the fine, young musicians in India.

I was excited about the prospect of creating a composition for this amazing young cellist that would be performed in India. My inspiration was Hindustani music and culture: the incredible sounds and art from the Hindustani classical tradition and the amazing tales of the deities. Naturally, I was drawn to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music, art, wisdom, and learning - aspects that define Jennifer's roles as an outstanding performer and educator. The music attempts to mimic elements of Hindustani compositions through its structure and graceful gestures.
