Concert Program:

Andrew Rudin: Portentum
Bruce Reiprich: Lambent (World Premiere)
Kaija Saariaho: Duft
Brian Fennelly: Quincunx II (World Premiere)

Jenny Olivia Johnson’s Pilot is an amplified micro-oratorio inspired by an Andes plane crash in 1972, and combines haunting electronic timbres with live processed voices, bassoon and piano. Louis Karchin’s Excursions combines electronic sounds with live viola, both parts emanating from a spectrally-derived sample of a viola melody. Other works include Andrew Rudin’s sonically-rich Portentum for solo percussion and Bruce Reiprich’s Lambent, based on subtle undulations emanating from the vibraphone and washing over the other instruments. Kaija Saariaho’s recent masterpiece for solo clarinet, Duft, combines traditional clarinet writing with multiphonics and glissandi and Brian Fennelly’s Quincunx II, with its haunting combination of quiet percussion and bass clarinet, will complete the program.
