Hibbard's 1979 Caprice for Viola Alone is an intensely personal work, performed by the composer many times. Fingerings, bowings, expressive marks, and articulations are fastidiously marked, and should be followed closely. This is particularly important for a pronounced aspect of Hibbard's musical vocabulary: the use of extreme register displacement for coloration amidst otherwise smooth voice leading.
