Description

Composer's Note:

"Dialogue" is the second in a series of three pieces dedicated to the composer Morton Feldman. All of the pieces in the series are based on the same musical material.

I. Stations: To Morton Feldman (solo piano), 1988
II. Dialogue (2-4 pianos), 1989/revised 2021
III. Stations II: To Morton Feldman (2 pianos), 2007

Dialogue is the one piece in the series that includes an element of indeterminacy. Dialogue consists of 8 repeated sections, labeled A-H in the score.

At the discretion of the individual player each of the sections can be repeated any number of times. The individual player introduces each of the different sections (A-H) in the order in which they appear in the score. After playing a section for the first time, the player is free to return to and move about among any of the previous sections before introducing the next new section. (For example: A-A-A-B-B-A-C-C-B-A-B-D-etc…) Players should avoid synchronizing the beginnings of sections with each other.

The piece has no set duration.
