Description

Composer's Note:

Odd Combinations is an experiment in time, harmony, and texture. Two instruments with great range, played in a similar manner, capable of producing a variety of textures and timbres are set against each other. The piece is a duet, with the instruments either seemingly at odds with one another, trading contrasting textures and harmonies; or blending and sharing similar musical ideas. Sometimes, the meter is strictly indicated; at other times, the players are free to lengthen or shorten musical passages as the mood hits them

Odd Combinations can be played on any two or combination of two keyboard: piano (plain or prepared), organ, harpsichord, synthesizer, etc. (The piece sounds best when the timbres of the two keyboards contrast.) No matter what instruments are used, the performers should take care that the two instruments are evenly balanced so that neither dominates. Amplification can be used if necessary.
