"Sonata for Cello and Piano is a longer Overton movement at 21 minutes. After a melancholic introduction, the work offers many sophisticated and brilliant variations before a crackling cadenza and final summation on a familiar Overton sonority, a combination of C minor and B-flat minor. Within the variations is some of Overton’s finest fast music. One wonders what would have happened had the composer pursued these kind of textures with relentless tenacity. The work is dedicated to celllist Charles McCracken, who performed the premiere with pianist Lucy Greene."  (Ethan Iverson, Do The Math Blog Article)
