Composer's Note:
Composed during the winter of 2021/22, this work explores five different moods, painted through a landscape of doorways. The final movement is dedicated to my late harmony teacher, composer and saxophonist Joe Maneri, who was on faculty at my undergraduate alma mater, the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Joe was a fun, gregarious, generous, and knowledgable man with a love for life and music. He worked with composer Ezra Sims on microtonal tuning systems and together they came up with a 72 note to the octave system (equal divisions) and accidentals. I learned much from Joe using the Schoenberg “Theory of Harmony” in my 18/19 Century Harmonic Practice course and also his Introduction to Microtonal Music course and owe a debt to him in instilling in me the love of theory, harmony, and the practice of hard work. Thank you, Joe!
