Composer's Note:

The piano pieces in this collection are written over a span of 40 years for performers, events, or occasions. Three Studies was written in 1981 for pianist Deborah Moriarty, who was my colleague teaching music at Michigan State University. Bounce was composed in 1989 to celebrate the birth of my daughter Carena Liptak. Like Clockwork was written in 2000 for Kristian Bezuidenhout to be performed on either fortepiano or modern piano. The photographer and computer graphic artist Antonio Toscano asked for my collaboration in an art exhibition that included his work, leading to the writing of Fracture in 2006. Star Light was composed as the required piece for performance in a piano competition during the 2009 Chautauqua Music Festival. The three short in memoriam pieces are in memory of Steven Stucky (Epitaph), Allan Schindler (Kinetic), and Ryuko Mizutani (Tori No Yoni). Droplets is a brief work written at the outset of the covid pandemic in the spring of 2020. The final work is Hocket, written in 2021 for the pianist Eunmi Ko.
