Her music has been described as \"... hauntingly beautiful ... with a magnetic quality which draws both performer and audience into a different world.\" \u003cem\u003eThe Bangkok Times\u003c\/em\u003e specially noted the \"remarkably evocative sonorities\" of her music. Owens's catalogue includes works for piano, two pianos, chamber and vocal ensembles, and symphony orchestra.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInfluenced by the Post-Webernian school in the 1950s, Owens's music evolved over the years in a modal direction which she calls the Resonant Continuum. Her compositions are transparent in texture with soaring pointillistic phrases. She also composed in traditional, historical idioms exemplified by her Homage To Corelli written in the Baroque style and an album of piano pieces, Serenades to the Composers in 19th century harmonic and stylistic idioms.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHer film score for \u003cem\u003eThe Clearing\u003c\/em\u003e, a film with no dialogue and 12 minutes of continuous music, is scored for two flutes, piano and timpani. \u003cem\u003eThe Clearing\u003c\/em\u003e was selected from over 300 entries to the 1994 New York Expo and has been screened at international film festivals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOwens performed widely as a pianist and harpsichordist. She was formerly the director of a Baroque and Elizabethan Chamber Ensemble. She also performed as a harpsichordist with the Collegium Musicum of the College of Staten Island.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShe was a free-lance editor for various publishers and prepared orchestral\/vocal scores from hand-written manuscripts for the Kurt Weill Foundation. She taught piano and composition privately and was on the faculty of the Neighborhood Music School, New York and the Music Institute of Staten Island. She was awarded teaching grants by the New York State Council on the Arts. Owens was a native of New York and received a BA in Music from The City College of NY. She did graduate work in Musicology at New York University. The 15 variations are strongly Baroque in style and idiom but the theme itself, consisting of seven rather than the customary eight measures, embodies both a major and minor dominant - elements which give the music a modal flavor and poetic expressiveness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe 15 variations present the theme in many aspects - beginning with a lyrical unfolding of the theme, to a majestic declaration, to a tender Cantabile and culminating in an impassioned Presto. As the work progresses, the variations become increasingly abstract and technically demanding yet always retain an enchanting, lyric quality. The two pianos are wedded into a whole, often perceived to be greater than its parts and play against one another in characteristically Baroque counterpoint. The stunning resonance and richness of two pianos was a source of great inspiration to the composer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe tradition of composers paying homage to other composers is a glorious one and has brought great works to the concert repertoire. Beethoven composed variations on a theme by Diabelli, Brahms on a theme by Handel, Rachmaninoff on a theme by Paganini. Schumann paid homage to Chopin and Ravel to Couperin. Edwin Hubble measured the red shift in 1929 and thus rendered impossible the idea of a static universe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRainer Maria Rilke, having died in 1926 of leukemia in a sanatorium near Montreax, did not know about the red shift or about Hubble’s discovery. Yet in his Eighth Elegy, Rilke personalized a phenomenon of universal significance, intuiting something of extraordinary magnitude.
