The work survives in two scored forms — for oboe and string orchestra, and for oboe and piano —and is in three continuous movements, marked Not too fast, Slow, and Fast. The manuscript is held in the Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The editor has confirmed two early performances, each using a different version of the work. The oboe-and-string-orchestra version was performed by William T. Gower, oboe, with the University of Southern Mississippi String Orchestra, Donald Munsell conducting, at USM in October 1970. Also on that program were the Sonata for Oboe and Piano by William Presser and the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Alvin Etler. The oboe-and-piano version was given as a “first performance” at a recital by Charles Lehrer, oboe, on April 4, 1971, in Bowker Auditorium at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; the pianist was likely Dwight Peltzer.

Because the oboe-and-piano version was performed publicly during the composer’s lifetime — at his own university in 1971 — it appears to be a performance version that Bezanson sanctioned, and not merely a piano reduction intended for rehearsal. In summer 2007, Philipp and I tried out some of the songs; we were both enchanted by the results and the prospect of actually performing the cycle through the saxophone and without words became serious. I had also begun to respond to the endeavor in my own compositional way, devising (in spite of myself) small responses to elements that stood out to me in each song. Lowell broke many of the patterns imposed upon her by society. Although she was not allowed to attend college, she lived her life on her own terms and became a highly regarded poet and author. I have been drawn to her poetry for a long time, and Patterns seemed especially apt when opera singer Amy Johnson and I discussed texts. The societal patterns the narrator rails against range from the garments that imprison her body to the "… pattern called a war…" that catches her fiancé in its maw. She plays wondrously with patterns in the poem, at times with dazzling internal rhymes ("… daffodils/bright blue squills"). But she also breaks patterns. She shifts line lengths and inserts unexpected repetitions and line breaks. With all this local brilliance she creates a powerful arc that I reflect in my setting. Patterns begins with the actor walking in her blossoming garden, where she complains of being corseted in stiff brocade. She goes on to describe her soft body beneath as she dreams of a meeting with her lover. Alas, it is not to be, and she explodes with anguish over his death and cries out against the pattern that is war. In this arc, Lowell nonetheless celebrates the cycles of nature, from flowers in full bloom, to the asters of fall, to snow. Patterns was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, Amy Johnson.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0685/8198/2428/collections/New_Issue_Monthly_Banner_2026.08.jpg?v=1787673330
