The music veers off in other directions but always returns to the breath, like meditation.  I think the title refers more symbolically to the sunset of one\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"AR-SA\" dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e’\u003c\/span\u003es life rather than nightfall, and is about attempting to hold on to that which we have found significant.  The second movement, Elegy, is more directly about loss.  There is a lot more to eulogize these days than close acquaintances. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe last movement is more a celebration of now, an immersion in the present.  The title \u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"AR-SA\" dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e“\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"IT\"\u003eQuintiola\u003c\/span\u003e” is a made-up variant of \u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"AR-SA\" dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e“\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"IT\"\u003ehemiola,\u003c\/span\u003e” but instead of 3:2, \u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"AR-SA\" dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan dir=\"RTL\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e“\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"IT\"\u003equintiola\u003c\/span\u003e” refers to 5:2.  The actual musical term for that ratio is dupla sesquialtera, but that seems a bit cumbersome for the name of a movement.  The work is a joyous dance, but the 5\/4 meter actually gives the piece some breadth and an unusually relaxed atmosphere, despite the activity.  The opening starts quietly with the pizzicato viola and cello, while the violin seems rather hung over from the emotional despair of the elegy but gets with the celebration eventually. In that form, it won first prize in the Rocky Mountain Chamber Choir's 2024 Call for Compositions on the theme “Choral Memoirs: Your Story, Your Song.” I created this new version for baritone and cello at the suggestion of the singer Philip Lima. The text is one of my own poems, a sonnet about attending a Portland Symphony Orchestra performance of Strauss’s \"Don Quixote\" with my dad about a year after my mom died. Watching and hearing the soloist’s final gesture, a dying downward glissando, I had the visceral sensation of playing it myself, entering deeply into the complex emotions of that moment. It’s a virtuosic work influenced by Scarlatti.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVanished is the last piece in Points and Tales. It’s meant to let the cycle rest. The downward moving figure that starts the piece is revisited several times.
