The work is scored for flute, alternating with piccolo; oboe; b flat clarinet, alternating with e flat alto saxophone; bassoon; f horn; b flat trumpet; tenor trombone; percussion; harp; piano; and strings.\n\u003cbr\u003eThe ten-minute work is in two parts, with each part being five-minutes in duration. The first part, subtitled Love Waltz, is marked Allegro grazioso, and has broad ABCBA structure in 3\/4 meter, utilizing a sustained melodic theme underscored by a lilting waltz rhythm in the A and B sections, and a more marked rhythmic theme in the contrasting C section. Love Waltz is an orchestration of the 2nd movement of the Adams Empire Sonata for Horn and Piano. \n\u003cbr\u003eThe second part, subtitled Love Ballad, has a tempo marking, Largo cantabile, and is in a broad three-part form with coda. Soft strings accompanying a lyrical saxophone solo begin the A section, after which the melody is heard in the first violins. The B section has a blues-like theme, underscored by light percussion, which grows in intensity before subsiding back to the A theme, now sounded by the French horn. Then it is put into reverse.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fourth movement is a direct transcription of a Quebecois folk melody as originally played in the 1920s by “Villeneuve and Bouchard,” a violin and accordion duo - later released on the 1985 vinyl LP album, \"You Can Tell the World About This\" (Morning Star Records). The rest of the movement is a mirror image of itself right back to the\u003cbr\u003every beginning.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fifth movement only lasts around a minute, and is a setting of the medieval melody (anonymously written) of the same name. The last movement, Shir Ha-Shirim, is a toccata-like distortion of a medieval Jewish setting of a text from the \u003cem\u003eSong of Songs\u003c\/em\u003e, III \/ 1, “By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loved; I sought him, but I found him not.” The \u003cem\u003eSong of Songs\u003c\/em\u003e is a love-song from God to Israel and vice-versa and it is read at Passover. The instrument is an unkeyed wood predecessor of the piccolo. Groundhog is a well-known Appalachian folk song.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIn this case, the original performance was on a small pygmy flute which was cut from a piece of cane. The player then burned four stop-holes at the lower ened, plugged that end with a rolled leaf then notched the top end, all in a few minutes. After playing a while, the performer seemed to lose all interest in the flute. The original can be heard on Music of the Ituri Forest , recorded by Colin M. Turnbull and Francis S. Chapman, Folkways LP No. FE4483.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThe last melody is from Turkestan, Afghanistan. The foot-tapping accompaniment employed in my piece was originally played on the Zer-Barhali, a type of drum. For the first movement, I wanted to treat rhythm as block hemiola juxtapositions, in a rugged manner with an unrelenting pulse that is always felt, no matter if it is in the foreground or background. The second movement utilizes syncopation expressed through popping and playful melodic lines, followed by an arpeggiated texture section singing out slightly more impassioned lines. For the third movement, I felt the need for abstraction and silence, using brief gestures that elude to music that could be, but is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Hold on a minute” was written for Chris Froh and Mayumi Hama as part of the inaugural Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music, and the title came from the shock of current political events, in particular the horrible and unacceptable tragedy in Charlottesville (among many others these days). One could say that the shock of open and out Neo-Nazis on the streets of America is reflected by the abstract third movement as it stands in contrast to the rest of the piece. Architecturally, the baths are housed in a 400-metre squared space divided into two distinct areas: the living and bathing areas, which had cold, lukewarm, and hot baths. The Arab Baths in Llíria were used until the end of the 15th century. After this, the building was used as an industrial area and later became a brick-making workshop. In 2012 the archaeological site was restored and it can currently be visited. I started looking for suitable poetry when I found De La Mare's poem \"Autumn.\" I was captivated. I started searching for other poems and eventually found a set of nine that were neatly grouped according to seasons or months (winter to winter). Eventually I removed two of the poems and settled on seven poems. After finishing the original version for high voice and piano I decided to orchestrate the piece for high voice and chamber orchestra.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach poem is, on a surface level, about a season, weather event, or month. But, as with most poetry, there is so much more upon deeper reflection. These poems have been my partner for over a year and as I read and re-read each one I found that I was constantly shifting my compositional approach. She was 14 when we rescued her and almost 20 when she passed in the summer of 2022. Lulu (14) followed in 2019, passing from cancer later that same year, then Toby (12) in the spring of 2020 who passed from a nasal tumor in 2022 at the age of 14. In December of 2022 we rescued Princess Buttercup, a spunky 15-year-old Beagle\/Jack Russell terrier mix. Our first pet together was Nubbins. We adopted her shortly after our wedding and while she wasn’t a senior then, at the age of 14 she certainly is now. We also have two more cats, Sawadee (around 7) and Pearl (around 3). Our dog Luna was only 3 when we adopted her in 2018 and she’s already starting to get white stars on her muzzle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn addition to these pets my wife and I have rescued, I grew up with animals. We had a cat named Mrs. Abe (due to a black chin against beautiful white fur on her face giving the illusion of a beard) and a dog named Libby (another Beagle). Mrs. Abe passed in 2007 and Libby in 2010. Just before Libby’s passing, we adopted two kittens, Scout and Finnegan. Finnegan and I bonded and were inseparable. He passed from a sudden stroke in 2021 – Scout is still doing fine although she misses her brother. In 2010 my sister and her husband adopted a dog named Sawyer. He passed just last week.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNeedless to say, after all of the love we give to these wonderful souls, losing them is profoundly difficult and painful. The Queen (who we also lost in 2022) said that “grief is the price we pay for love,” and after losing six beloved pets during my life I can say with some authority that the grief is a fair price to pay for their love.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’m not a religious man but I find the concept of “rainbow bridge” to be comforting. I can see them all in my imagination. Toby and Lulu are chasing squeaker toys while Libby eagerly eats Pup-Peroni treats and Sawyer chews on a pillow. Willow and Mrs. Abe are sleeping in the sun and Finnegan is running free.
