The subtitle \"In tempore belli\" originally referred to the Vietnam War. The US has been involved in war almost continuously since World War II. Will the world ever have peace?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis string quartet is dark, demanding and ominous sounding. Many different string techniques are used, such as the usual pizzicato and glissando, but also more 20th century techniques like col legno, col legno battuto, and sul ponticello. The musical language is atonal, though not serial. The intervals of a tritone and minor ninth, as well as major seventh, and certain sets, like A Bb E Eb , first heard in the viola, dominate the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhile this is intended as a single movement, there are three sections: Presto\/Meno Mosso, Lento and Vigorously. There is no pause before Lento, as the instruments glissando into a dense sonority of double stops of these pitches: D D# E F# G Ab Bb. A sight pause may occur before Vigorously, as the final sound in Lento is a pianissimo fermata sonority made up of G Bb F and F#. The Agbadza ensemble includes an iron double bell (the central instrument of the ensemble), a gourd rattle, and several barrel-shaped drums in addition to singing, hand clapping and dancing. The polyrhythm of 6\/4 and 12\/8 is central to Ewe music, and it is remarkable to me that Ewe musicians can feel both pulses simultaneously. The first part of this piece alternates between these two time feels. Later, the rhythm of the melody is the rhythm of the double bell. In the second half of the piece, the original melody returns while the viola plays the rhythm of the kagan, the smallest drum in the ensemble.\n\u003cbr\u003eAgbadza songs have a \"call and response\" form, and the violins begin the piece with a popular Agbadza melody, with the first violin playing the \"call\" and the second violin playing the \"response.\" I then recompose the melody until it is unrecognizable. The unusual lyrics of the song are translated as: \"Big carnivore eats forbidden meat and says, \"My liver is burning.'
