One obvious influence was the beautiful poetry of the late Seamus Heaney, Ireland's Nobel Prize-winning poet. The second was a visit to the ancient town of Auvillar, France, where I was invited to spend a week as composer-in-residence at the Etchings Festival in 2010. The town had an ancient market area dating back to Roman times, and also had been (and is still today) a stopping-off point for pilgrims en-route to a sacred shrine in the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. I envisioned the development of such a town in its early stages. The instrumental movements (I Origins, II Constructions, V Journeys: Pilgrims, Prayer, Conflicts, Reconciliations) suggest a chronological trajectory. The songs (II, III, VI, and VII) are stops along the way. The first poem takes its cue from the sound of a crowd echoing through an ancient coliseum; the second accompanies a dance (sounding more Irish than French to my ear) that might have been performed as festive entertainment. The third song is a reflection on the fragility of the human condition, and the last paints a portrait of a still harbor shimmering in the light.

Reviews:

"This was the most purely contemporary piece of the evening. Arches had to wait for its premiere until the Covid-19 pandemic had begun to subside in 2022, but previous to its composition, Sam and I had discussed various possibilities for the trumpet's accompaniment, and settled upon the modern tones of the vibraphone as providing an unusual and intriguing complement to the brass sound. To this timbre, I added a few chimes, and in two places in the work, expanded the percussion to include some non-pitched instruments. The first non-pitched percussion cadenza interrupts; it ushers in a more contemplative mood. Then the work reverses itself, and a return to the faster music leads to a second brief percussion cadenza that, in turn, initiates a slowing process as the trumpet begins to recall more and more of its opening legato lines, but in a modified reverse order. Given the pervasive palindromic allusions, "Arches" seemed an appropriate title, evoking the symmetrical architectural shape. And, of course trumpet players are often found under arches. We are in distinctly Modernist territory here (Karchin's teachers include Fred Lerdahl, Gunther Schuller, and Bruno Maderna); and yet, it is Karchin's ear that stops this from being objectivist and forbidding. Take the very first sonority of Dreamscape (2016) for oboe and violin, a melding of high oboe with a violin tremolo between written pitch and the harmonic two octaves and a fifth above. It is otherworldly, and clearly challenging for the performers; it is a measure of Jacqueline Leclair and Miranda Cuckson's control over their instruments that the sound field is so convincingly conjured. There is playfulness here, too, in amongst the quarter-tones and the multiphonics. The work is a response to Mallarme's poem "Apparition" (a love poem), and there is no doubting that Karchin explores the two instrument's relationship while, towards the end, inserting a barcarolle, acknowledging the place of the work's premiere (Venice)."

- Colin Clarke, Fanfare (03/2021)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0685/8198/2428/files/ACA-KARC-030e_Page_1_cde30d1b-d399-4914-99b0-7e03db5bd82f.jpg?v=1724496992
karchin-duo-for-violin-and-cello
Duo for Violin and Cello

Review:

"There were bursts of patter, a contrapuntal intricacy and sudden, witty acknowledgements of tradition all used for painting intricate psychological states. Since the Edicts were written to protest objectionable practices within the Church of Luther's time, I decided, for texts, to turn to poems of one who had preached against evil in more recent times, the Lutheran minister, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. While living and working in Germany during the years of Nazi rule, Bonhoeffer spoke out against the party's beliefs, and was imprisoned for his views and executed shortly before the end of World War II. Already recognized for several acclaimed song cycles and the one-act opera Romulus, Karchin (b. 1951) describes Eyre, composed over a four-year period, as "the largest project I have ever undertaken". He is clearly a master of theatrical writing. In the best operatic traditions, the score has an inner logic that mirrors the dramatic progression of each aria, scene, and the piece as a whole. The lilting phrases of the Prelude immediately establish an atmosphere of Gothic Romance, and structural formality evokes the sense of period. There are three acts with three scenes each, and Diane Osen's libretto (Karchin rightly calls it a "feat of compression") abounds in neat rhyme schemes that strike a remarkable balance between plainspoken clarity and what the composer terms a "faithful echo" of Bronte's "distinctive syntax".

The composer's engaging and melodious vocal writing employs a variety of expressive techniques to differentiate the characters. For example, in the final scene of Act I, Rochester opens up to Jane about his history of dissolution with short phrases and awkward intervals. When Jane responds ("It is God alone who judges'), her vocal lines are even and sustained, and the captivating sweetness of the three-note falling figures in the orchestra exorcise Rochester's demons in a flash. There are numerous orchestral highlights as well, all with purpose and direction, like the interlude between the second and third scenes of Act 2 that sets the mood for Jane's aborted wedding to Mr Rochester. A number of full-blown solos for the principals, designed to "help establish their characters and the emotions that motivate them", are inserted into the first act.

Thus, two consecutive and contrasting arias in the very first scene give Jennifer Zetlan the opportunity to display her commanding vocal presence in the title role. Her instrument is a bright and flexible soprano, and she makes every phrase sound natural and artless. It's no wonder Zetlan is in high demand for new works "¦Ryan MacPherson gives a fully committed performance of Mr Rochester, a role that demands the robustness of a verismo tenor. He hits all of the character's explosive cadences on the mark and shows a flair for character singing, as when he disguises himself as a Gypsy in order to elicit information from Jane about her feelings for him. Together, Zetlan and MacPherson make the most of the exquisitely moving redemption scene that ends the opera. The full libretto is included, though hardly required, thanks to the happy confluence of Karchin's canny setting of text, the consistency of the singers' diction, and the high quality of the audio engineering. Under the composer's direction, the Orchestra of the League of Composers plays the sumptuous score with notable grace."

- Altman, American Record Guide

"Karchin's Jane Eyre is an old-fashioned opera, bold in its aim, unblushing about opera's traditions. This is a symphonic opera as much as a vocal one. Karchin writes like a man who has lived with opera, although Jane Eyre is only his second opera, and his first full-length one. She has performed a feat of compression. Osen's libretto is dotted with interesting couplets. I wrote one of them down: "Can I trust you with this task?' "Need you ask?' The composer, and the librettist, and the stage director"”and the novelist, Charlotte Brontë"”had me the whole way. The end was moving, as Jane returns to Rochester, in his wrecked physical state. Following the suggestion of Network director Linda Reichert, the work takes as its point of departure the magnificent artwork and spirit of the new Barnes Collection in Center City Philadelphia. Touring the museum in May of 2014, I was struck by the Rousseau works in particular: by their fantastical subject matter, daring thematic juxtapositions, and in particular, by their rich, lustrous colors. This last characteristic influenced the composition's title, and throughout, I tried to translate some of Rousseau's dazzling hues into musical terms. The animals roaming through the "luminous fields" suggested the work's opening motif, and much of the writing flows from that. About two-thirds way through, each instrument has a chance to shine with a short solo, after which they come together for a final romp. The motive's introduction and repetitions at the opening are separated by hesitations and pauses; subsequently it becomes agitated, then lighter and bubbly.
