I decided upon a classic declamation for the voice, operatic in \"Tears!\" and more straightforward in the other songs; the piano counter-part of each song would be based in its own trichord (or, in one case, tetrachord) relationship. In schematic form, the five songs are based on the five schemata: C-G-A [and a chordal C-G-D); D-Eb-A-Bb, C-F-Bb and C-E-F; Eb-G-A; and an alternation of C-E-F_ and C-E-B. It was an easy step to conceive of a work that would take its departure from historical context: that of the slave life of the nineteenth century, together with freedom, as those who experienced it remembered it in interviews, letters, and other documents. The compilation of such documents from nineteenth-century women was in fact my current reading: \"We Are Your Sisters: Black Women in the Nineteenth Century\", edited by Dorothy Sterling. The voices of these women seemed so eloquent, and the subject so compelling, that I chose that historical context for the choral work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI turned to the past also for the musical basis operandi: to the Black shout and spiritual for part of the material, and to the seventeenth-century concept of \"tone\" for other parts. \"Tone\" was a transitional theory that bridged the considerable distance between \"mode\" and \"key.\" Of course, a composer rethinks such concepts in putting them to use in another era, and although the principle is the same, I used it differently. In brief, it is the concept of tone as materials related to a scale, major or minor, in which the functions inhere as individual tones, without reference to key--notably omitting the defining role of upper and lower dominants. This concept allows for use of the scale materials of a key without the functions of the key. Admittedly, composers such as Bela Bartok, Gyorgy Ligeti, and George Crumb have made much progress in the use of instruments and instrumentation. However, apart from some accepted new ways of employing instruments, a romantic size orchestra in the twentieth century still sounds, to my ears, like a romantic size orchestra.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI felt that trying to change this fact was a bit like trying to alter the universe, so instead of attempting to invent a \"new\" sound, I aimed to highlight the similarity of acoustic sounds between twentieth century and late romantic material (keep in mind this work was written in the last century!!)\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe work is an ABA1 structure, the first section being, to my knowledge, an invention of my own: namely, \"Pan tonal Phase Music.\" This section uses antiphonal orchestral choirs and alternating pulses (similarly employed in Steve Reich's The Desert Music) but with non-centered sound instead of diatonicism. After a climax, this is contrasted by an example of Ligeti's micropolyphony (as employed in Atmospheres) and then is contrasted by a pastiche of Gustav Mahler (the B section). Mahler is then parodied through interruptions, truncation, excessive silences and exaggerated increases in tempo.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThe pastiche fades into a quotation from Mahler's 5th symphony, Brahms' 4th symphony, Beethoven's 7th, Mozart's 39th, and Haydn's 104th, one after the other, similar to the splicing effect in analog tape music (and further highlighting the similarity in orchestral timbre over the centuries).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is not the first occurrence of this material. The harmonies that are employed against the pulsating string figures in the A section are mostly derived from the Mahler 5th symphony extract, although there are also occurrences derived from the quotations as well. All the quoted material in the A section is unrecognizable. However, the Mahler 5th symphony quotation becomes a more obvious appendage to the orchestral fabric towards the end of the B section.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFollowing this, the work resumes with the micropolyphony of the A section and then there is a retrograde of the opening material of the A section. The cello suddenly plays alone again in an extended cadenza which alternates between rage and hope. Reflectively, the cello plays quiet harmonics and is joined by the piano.
