Forty years later, the lyricism and social activism found in Dorothy Rudd Moore's opera Frederick Douglass still resonate. The central aria, the Fourth of July Speech, takes its lyrics from the abolitionist Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), whose memorable speech was given on July 5, 1852, during the height of his anti-slavery advocacy work. In his speech, Douglass questions the very idea of Independence Day for people of African descent in a nation practicing slavery: Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? Moore's opera re-examines Douglass speech and the idea of liberty in which it traffics through music and dramatic focus.

PHOTO BY BERT ANDREWS, from ACA Archives, Special Collections in Performing Arts, University of Maryland.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0685/8198/2428/files/ACA-MODR-009e_Page_1_b4b0bdf6-9239-4a7d-ae45-305cd9291f9e.jpg?v=1726664721
moore-one-at-a-time-two-at-a-time
ONE AT A TIME - voice and piano

Harriet Tubman's aria from the opera Frederick Douglass (1984) by Dorothy Rudd Moore.

Act II, Scene 2

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0685/8198/2428/files/Pages_from_MODR-041_Moore_One_df677b79-4b08-4d93-8b07-5a752b1de318.jpg?v=1739231725
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0685/8198/2428/files/Frederick_Douglass_-_cover_test_letter_size.jpg?v=1738731859
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0685/8198/2428/files/Frederick_Douglass_-_cover_test_letter_size5.jpg?v=1738733913
