Her compositions have been performed in concerts and festivals such as the Aspen Summer Music Festival and School, the Zodiac Music Festival (France,) BUTI Tanglewood Summer Music Festival, the Atlantic Music Festival, the Uzmah\/Upbeat International Summer Music Festival (Croatia,) the High Score Summer Festival (Italy,) Charlotte New Music Festival, and the VIPA Summer Festival and Academy (Spain.) \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAn accomplished pianist, Clara performed her own \"Fantasy Concerto\" with the American Symphony Orchestra under Leon Botstein. Her ensemble works have been performed widely In United States and Europe, receiving commissions from the New Juilliard Chamber Ensemble, Quartet Indigo, Iktus Percussion Ensemble, Smash Ensemble, Cisum Percussion Ensemble, the Longleash Ensemble, and the Da Capo Chamber Players. She has received numerous awards including the American Academy of Arts and Letters Charles Ives Scholarship (2018,) the Gena Raps String Quartet Competition (Juilliard 2017,) the New Juilliard Chamber Ensemble Competition (2017,) seven ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards and the North\/ South Consonance Award and commission.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSunbin Clara Kim was awarded Bachelor's degrees in music composition and physics from Bard College and the Master of Musical Arts degree in composition from The Juilliard School. Unlike his more well-known works from the 1950s in bright oranges and pinks, the late works took on a much darker tone. Throughout each of the movements, I have made use of gradual processes of various sizes\"”slow to fast, sparse to dense, one timbre to another, and so on\"”to imitate the experience of noticing the layers of detail in a Rothko piece during several minutes of viewing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe first movement is based on the painting Black, Red and Black, a bright, blood-red band on a black background. This movement presents the stark contrast between the red, represented by the sound of a deep bell in E-flat, and the dissonant, cluster-tone-like black. The second movement, Rust, Blacks on Plum, is a study on the four predominant colors in Rothko's painting. Four strands of harmony, each allotted to distinct groups of instruments, interact in counterpoint with one another to form new composite harmonies, just as colors might interact on the canvas in their complementarity. The third movement, Green Divided by Blue, inspired by one of the few bright paintings during Rothko's late period, is accordingly full of bright sonorities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe fourth movement,Black on Grey, is written after Rothko's last work, which came shortly before his own death. Bach's Art of Fugue, and Julius Eastman's Buddha. The first two of these are hypothetical impressions of what they would sound like. Roslavets belonged to the heady days of Russian Futurism in the 1920's Soviet Union, which sought to abandon old traditions and create an entirely new artistic language. His third and fourth piano sonatas are lost. The Bach \"excerpt\" would belong to Contrapunctus XIV, the unfinished last fugue in The Art of Fugue that would have climaxed in the unbroken cycling of four themes in four voices. Eastman's Buddha is one his last pieces, composed while homeless. Although it is a real piece, its strangely laid out score is difficult to interpret, as he left no performance instructions. A discordant, serial \"machine music\" interrupts the collage of these pieces, along with sketches from an old piece (from the composer) as a \"bystander\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe title refers to concept of the \"slow cancellation of the future\" in the writings of Franco Berardi and Mark Fisher. This is the shrinking ability of culture to create new ideas\"”that is, outside the hegemony of capital\"”beginning in the 1980's. Without the feeling that a better world (or \"future\") than ours is even thinkable, much less within our reach, the same ideas will be retread over and over, resembling the output of a procedural generation algorithm, code in a machine that holds up extreme inequality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe three lost pieces symbolise aspects of humanity that are \"killed\" by the grinding machine. Roslavets represents the ending of \"the era in which people trusted in the future\"\"”the concept of \"future\", widely held as late as 1977, as an evermarching \"progress\" towards a better world. Bach represents the idea of the past or \"tradition\", painted as a towering master of the most intricate baroque masterpieces, but now played on repeat in Port Authority Bus Terminal to instill fear in the homeless. Eastman represents the consequences of the previous two losses.
