Celebrate the New Year with effervescent, tuneful, toe-tapping music by Gershwin, Bernstein, Joplin and Williams. Scott Joplin's Overture to Treemonisha, his 1911 opera, with orchestration by T.J. Anderson, is scheduled to be performed by the Ama Deus Ensemble, and pianist Peter Donohoe perform a trio of popular pieces by Gershwin, and introducing to most of us Bernstein's seldom performed, and devilishly difficult, Prelude, Fugue & Riffs. Scott Joplin will also be represented by several renowned rags, and a medley of John Williams' movie soundtrack scores will be on the program.
Scott JoplinThe world premiere of Joplin's Treemonisha took place on January 27, 1972, as a joint production of the music department of Morehouse College and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Atlanta, Georgia, using the orchestration by T.J. Anderson. The performance was directed by noted African-American dancer Katherine Dunham and conducted by Robert Shaw.
Often appearing in the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Ama Deus ensemble offers repertoire which includes Baroque masterworks such as Handel's Messiah and Judas Maccabus; Bach's B Minor Mass and Passions; fully-staged Baroque and Classical operas such as Acis and Galatea and Dido and Aeneas; and choral and chamber orchestra gems by Vivaldi, such as Gloria and Magnificat. From the genius of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Verdi comes a brilliant array of Classical and early Romantic vocal-symphonic works, symphonies and concertos.
