John Melby: Concerto No. 2 for Piano And Computer
The Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Computer, which receives its first performance at tonight’s concert, was composed in late 2005 and early 2006 and was dedicated to the composer’s teacher, colleague, and friend, Milton Babbitt, on the occasion of his ninetieth birthday, May 10, 2006. The work, which is virtuosic in character and cast in one movement with an extended cadenza for piano solo, is scored for piano and a compact disc that contains a computer-synthesized accompaniment, “orchestral” in nature (though this should not in any sense of the word be construed as implying that an attempt has been made to “imitate” the sounds of traditional orchestral instruments). The computer-synthesized music was realized in the composer’s Macintosh-based computer studio using the MacCsound program for digital sound synthesis. This composition is one in a series of (so far) fifteen concerti for various instruments and computer-synthesized sounds.
