THE STING OF COMMAND

Composer:
Robert Carl
Instrumentation freestyle:
Baritone voice plus quartet of clarinet, violin, piano, double bass

Score is in C, except for octave transposition of contrabass
Descriptive note:
This song has been commissioned as part of a cabaret series presented by Sequitur, which biennially concentrates on specific themes; the cycle into which this work falls deals with “power”. Taking a concept from a work of Elias Canetti, I have crafted my own text. The piece falls into a recitative and aria form. ----Robert Carl

Elias Canetti, in his magisterial work, Crowds and Power, presents the concept of the “sting of command”. What is the sting? In every hierarchy, there is always one above all others. This one relays an order to the next one below, and with that order a “sting” is lodged. The only way to be rid of the sting is to pass it down to next lower on the chain of command. And so the sting travels through the structure, burning in one lieutenant after another, until it finally arrives at the poor soul who has no one left on whom to pin it. While the imagery is military, the concept applies to any organization--- political, industrial, cultural, familial.

SOUNDINGS

Composer:
Robert Gibson
Instrumentation freestyle:
quartet for double basses

The title of my double bass quartet, Soundings, is a reference in part to the nautical term for measuring the depth of water. This term has an obvious connection to the double bass as the “deepest” sounding string instrument of the orchestra. “Soundings” can also refer to various types of exploration, and the five movements of the piece are my personal “explorations” of the instrument that is closest to me. Soundings was commissioned by and is dedicated to Robert Oppelt, Rick Barber, Jeff Weisner and Ali Yazdanfar, all members of the National Symphony Orchestra at the time of this commission in 2000.

Two Pieces for Solo Double Bass

Composer:
Ken Steen
I. or II. Drifting Off Drifting Off is primarily constructed from the available natural overtones playable on the double bass, and as such, was conceived as  a kind of “harmonics étude.” The overall effect should be very delicate and spacious, with fermatas - particularly those placed on rests - to be of long though varied durations. This piece also works well being performed on amplified double bass with an effects processor set to a rich reverb with at least 5 seconds of decay.

II. or I. Basspiece #2 Basspiece #2 is a work that in some ways portrays the double bass as a bit of a caricature of itself: sneaking along, almost cartoon, intense, frenzied, keening, almost lyrical, sinister dervish tötentanz; these are but some of the characterizations requested. Dynamic changes and character transitions should be exaggerated, high contrast.
