I. or II. Drifting Off Drifting Off is primarily constructed from the available natural overtones playable on the double bass, and as such, was conceived as a kind of “harmonics étude.” The overall effect should be very delicate and spacious, with fermatas - particularly those placed on rests - to be of long though varied durations. This piece also works well being performed on amplified double bass with an effects processor set to a rich reverb with at least 5 seconds of decay.
II. or I. Basspiece #2 Basspiece #2 is a work that in some ways portrays the double bass as a bit of a caricature of itself: sneaking along, almost cartoon, intense, frenzied, keening, almost lyrical, sinister dervish tötentanz; these are but some of the characterizations requested. Dynamic changes and character transitions should be exaggerated, high contrast.
