CONCERTO FOR VIOLA AND PERCUSSION

Composer:
David Liptak
Scoring:
vla, perc quartet

Instruments

David Liptak's *Concerto for Viola and Percussion, *for solo viola and percussion quartet, was composed for violist John Graham, who gave the first performances of the work in 2006 at the Eastman School of Music and the Aspen Music Festival.

The four movements have descriptive titles:
*1. August Snow, 2. Moving, Perpetually, 3. A Song That Melts, *and *4. Speaking Your Mind.*

Review:

"David Liptak's 'Concerto for Viola and Four Percussion' turned out to be
contemporary music at its level best: It was original and adventurous, but
it wore these attributes lightly and unselfconsciously. The piece used
xylophone, gong, chimes, snare drum and an array of other instrumentsthat
seemingly left no percussion sound unexplored. It was, in effect, a
sparkiling work that included some of the most ardent viola writing
imaginable."   -John Pitcher, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, 4/19/06

Maria Mitchell was one of America’s first professional astronomers, and she came to international fame with her discovery of new comet in 1847.  She was one of the original  members of the faculty of Vassar College, which was founded in 1864. Her journals and letters are filled with writings about science and education, and her writing is often poetical and vivid.  The Eye that Directs a Needle is a setting of the following excerpt from her journal:

ECHOMETRY

Composer:
Ross Bauer
Instrumentation freestyle:
percussion quartet

Instruments

"Echometry,” for percussion quartet, was composed during the spring of 2012. It was written for and is dedicated to Talujon. A pertinent definition of echometry is “the measurement of the duration of and intervals between sounds.” The piece begins with unpitched percussion. Pitched elements, including large and medium gongs, are gradually introduced. These ringing metallic sounds, along with those of the Tam-Tam, the Vibraphone and the Glockenspiel become increasingly important as the piece unfolds.

Pt. Reyes Seashore

Composer:
Fred Cohen
Scoring:
Percussion Ensemble (12 players)
The sound world of Pt. Reyes Seashore came to me in the winter of 2010-11 during a hike with my family in the Pt. Reyes National Seashore.  Pt. Reyes is a cape about 60 miles north of San Francisco.  It has the distinction of being connected to the San Andreas Fault, and, as a result, of moving northward at the rate of about 2 inches per year.  It is the home of numerous species of flora and fauna, and contains some of the most remarkable views of and access to the Pacific Ocean on the West Coast. We had been hiking the McClures Beach Trial in the northern part of the park when we passed uphill of a magnificent passage of ocean pounding against the rocks and beach of the coast.  The sound—even at a distance of perhaps 500 yards—was incredibly memorable:  deep booms, echoes, churns…. it challenged me to think of any human produced or created sound that could equal its magnificence.  Experiencing the scene—the waves on the coast, the vast ocean behind it—I thought of the power of the ocean, and the humility of water.

MUSIC OF REMEMBRANCE

Instrumentation freestyle:
flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, percussion

Composer's note:  The Train by Carl Slotboom is a play about two holocaust survivors who tell their story, remembering the events of several decades ago when they were young. It seems that many of their memories are buried, and they are reluctant to speak of that time in their lives, but the present day couple, on a train trip, finds that they are thrust into a memory loop by the train itself. The train becomes a symbol, a catalyst for something to happen. The older couple begins to remember events in their past, events that have been long buried in their memories. They discover that the presence of the past, buried and then remembered, strengthens their love and gives them hope.

MARFANTASIE

Composer:
Robert Carl
Instrumentation freestyle:
fl/alto fl, 2 alto sax, bscl, elec guit, Perc (1), 6 vlns, 2 vla, 2 vcl, 1 cb

Composer's note: Marfantasie takes its name from the tiny American Western town of Marfa, which is home to the Chinati Foundation, Donald Judd’s collection of conceptual art, both his own and of like-minded artists. It is a strange conflation of cowboy culture and the avant-garde. In celebration of this incongruous American landscape, both natural and cultural, the two movements: 1) the vast seemingly empty---though actually fantastically active---desert landscape, and 2) the succession of seemingly similar---yet highly detailed, crafted, and varied--- basic forms that make up Judd’s art.
