Ramon Zupko
Instrumentation freestyle:
fl, hn, vln, vla, vcl, hp

Ensemble Type

A sextet of five movements, each of which was inspired by a different haiku alluding to perceptions recalled from experiences of the day or night. The work relies heavily on timbre and special instrumental effects to evoke the atmosphere suggested by each of the haikus. There are numerous extended performances techniques, and some proportional notation in two of the movements. Technically difficult, for advanced performers only.

FLUXUS 10

Composer:
Ramon Zupko
Instrumentation freestyle:
hn, tape (CD)

A piece for french horn and 2 tracks of electronic sound. All of the electronic sounds in this work are samples of live horn sounds, transformed with an Ensoniq digital sampling keyboard, and recorded to 7 tracks of tape, later to a stereo CD. The work is alternately both toccata-like and lyrical and utilizes the full range of the french horn. High difficulty - advanced performer only.

PROLOGUE, ARIA, & DANCE

Ramon Zupko
Instrumentation freestyle:
hn, str orch

Instruments

A work for solo horn and string orchestra, in three continuous sections contained within a single movement. The brief prologue features widely spaced string sonorities and a declamatory horn part; the aria is more lyrical, with momentary references to the prologue; the dance is driving and rhythmic, with a good deal of syncopation. The music of the prologue makes another brief appearance before the rushing coda. Difficult - suitable for college, community, or professional orchestras.

Instrumentation freestyle:

Ensemble Type

Huatzu Hill for soprano and chamber orchestra is a setting of four poems by Wang Wei, an 8th-century Chinese poet, as translated into English by G.W. Robinson. Three of the four songs depict landscapes near Wang's country retreat in the Wang River valley. The second song is a bittersweet farewell to a beloved friend. Huatzu Hill is scored for chamber orchestra and soprano soloist. It was premiered at the Composers Conference in Vermont and has been performed by the New England Philharmonic and the Berkshire Symphony. "A series of rich landscapes - the colors sharp, the feeling powerfully concentrated, the expression concise..." Boston Globe.

Veils

Composer:
Marilyn Bliss
Scoring:
2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Bassoons, 2 Horns, Strings

Ensemble Type

Veils was inspired by a group of paintings by the great American abstract painter Morris Louis. For these paintings Louis devised a technique of staining the canvas, allowing the colors both to mingle and to keep separate their identities. The results are paintings of delicate, veil-like translucence, which, combined with their large scale, entice the observer to enter. In my orchestra piece, I have translated some of these techniques and images into music. Winds are in pairs and usually appear together, purifying their color; melodic lines in the strings are seamlessly passed from section to section; quasi-canonic passages create increasingly dense, but still translucent, "veils" of sound. Throughout the piece, the principal oboe is the protagonist. It sometimes seems to stand aside, observing, reflecting, only to be swept back into the flow of the piece. Thus the oboe-observer sees the piece from within, at last fulfilling the desire of the observer in the gallery.
