COSMIC FANTASIES

Composer:
Phillip Rhodes
Instrumentation freestyle:
high-school band

-Intended for younger band ensemble, written for the eighth grade band of the composer's son. The instrumentation is not standard for concert band (for example, there are only two clarinet parts rather than the usual three); it was tailored to fit the instrumentation of the band that commissioned it.  During the time period it was first performed, many of the students were absorbed in a fantastic and complex game which was generically known as “Dungeons and Dragons”. It was also during the period of Star Wars film culture dramatizing the struggle between “good” and “evil” on a galactic scale. Within this environment, the programmatic nature of this piece found its inspiration.

Silent Moon

Composer:
Ken Steen
Commissioned by Simsbury Public Schools, Silent Moon was composed in 2007 for SSAA and piano. The text, collected from a number of different poems by Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) where the moon appears prominently, were adapted from the originals in Italian.

Calvino says it best: "As soon as the moon appears in poetry, it brings with it a sensation of lightness, suspension, a silent calm enchantment." "For the miraculous thing about [Leopardi's] poetry is that he simply takes the weight out of language, to the point that it resembles moonlight. The appearances of the moon in his poetry do not take up many lines, but they are enough to shed the light of the moon on the whole poem, or else to project upon it the shadow of its absence.

It is the sensation of lightness, of suspension and transparency that I was after in adapting and setting Leopardi's poetry in Silent Moon.

Commissioned by the Vermont Youth Orchestra (40th anniversary)and the Burlington First Night (20th anniversary).

RESOUND ! Was commissioned by First Night Burlington in celebration of its 20th anniversary and in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Vermont Youth Orchestra. It was first performed by that orchestra under Troy Peters on “first night,” December 31, 2002.

Crafted to its purpose, my concert overture (or: my concert fanfare) variously answers the challenge if its title: RESOUND !  extols the contributions of both the VYO and First Night Burlington to Northern Vermont’s vital cultural life. The music prolongs, by continuous repetition, two lively motifs: one mainly rhythmic in nature, the other melodic. With each reverberation the freshness of the primary melody is renewed by changes in orchestration and harmony, and by means of transposition and contrapuntal embellishment.
