beginning and the end.” (Revelation 22:13).
Interlude 1 “Ma fin est mon commencement (“My end is my beginning”)”
Movement II.“I am the door of the sheep..I am the good shepherd..”(John
10: 7-17) “Ma fin est mon commencement”
Interlude II. “I have other sheep that are not of this fold.”
Movement III. “Do not fear, only believe.” (Mark 5:36)
Interlude III. “Fare thee well and fare thee forward, Traveler!”
Movement IV. The Crystal Fountain

There are four movements, with an interlude between each. As a nod to Jerome Reed’s extensive chamber music performances, these
interludes feature various individual players from the ensemble, gathered around the keyboard.

OPENINGS

Composer:
Christopher Shultis
Instrumentation freestyle:
large ensemble of winds, saxophones, harp, piano, brass, percussion, contrabass

Openings is written for winds and percussion. There are four movements: mouth, mind, eye and
ear. The piece began in 2004 as I walked up the Spruce Spring Trail near Red Canyon
campground in the Manzano Wilderness for the first time. Openings is physically connected to
the density of the trail as one climbs up a ridge of the mountain. When you've reached a certain
height there are openings out into the mesa where you can see for miles and miles. Openings is
artistically connected to Encounter, the installation piece I made in collaboration with visual artist
Hee Sook Kim.
