WHIRLIGIGS for saxophone quartet

Composer:
Jody Rockmaker
Instrumentation freestyle:
sax 4tet: satbar

Ensemble Type

While diddling around on another project, I happened upon the opening gesture of Whirligigs. I spent some time with the new motive, but soon realized that it would not fit the piece at hand. The close-knit harmonies and counterpoint reminded me of saxophone sections from the Big Band Era. The idea developed further into an intricately woven imitative counterpoint. This exciting new texture brought to mind a new image: a field of whirling gizmos, frantically spinning in a strong breeze. Whirligigs was born from these basic elements.

ROTHKO LANDSCAPES

Composer:
Jody Rockmaker
Instrumentation freestyle:
2cl in Bb, 2cl in A

Ensemble Type

"Rothko Landscapes" was composed after the success of two earlier works, "Multiplicities" for solo clarinet and "Magical Place of My Dreams" for two clarinets. Both works, written for the clarinetist Richard Nunemaker, use extended techniques for the instruments, most notably multiphonics. Dick wondered about the possiblilities of four clarinets using the same methods. He also suggested using the paintings of the great abstract expressionist, Mark Rothko, as a theme for the new work. The first two movements are meant to be musical realizations of Rothko's paintings "Maroon on Blue" and "Number 7." The last movement, "Abstract Expressions," summarizes the musical events heard earlier.

FOUR PRELUDES

Composer:
Ramon Zupko
Scoring:
brass qrt 2-1-1

Ensemble Type

Four preludes for brass quartet was an earlier interpretation of the same poem of T.S. Eliot as my woodwind quintet of 1979. This is a briefer and far less difficult work than the latter one, having been written for a high school brass quartet. The movements are alternately slow and fast, and make extensive use of mutes. Suitable for advanced high school through college performers.

WATER: QUARTET for SAXOPHONES

Composer:
Gregory Hall
Instrumentation freestyle:
4 Saxophones Bb sop, Eb alto, Bb tenor, Eb bari

Ensemble Type

"Bathed in soft light this very extensive work declares a lavishly stocked imagination which is even more grounded in melody. It also has sufficient graininess to side-step blandness and to sustain the invention over such a long span. The Mountain movement has something of the Copland outdoor air. The final Fugue has a gawky stagger as a prelude to Hall’s hard-wired leaning towards sophisticated metropolitan melody draws him back into a rapturous meditation. That pecking staccato ends the piece with a propulsion that references William Schuman. "  --Rob Barnet, MusicWeb International

Flocks

Composer:
Marilyn Bliss
Instrumentation freestyle:
flute quartet, includes piccolo and alto flute

Ensemble Type

Flocks, for flute quartet, was inspired by the annual migration of flocks of birds from their summer home in the North to their winter home in the South. The piece is loosely programmatic, beginning with the first restless urges of some, then even the most reluctant birds, to leave their northern home, through their joyful flight south -- often flying in parallel or similar motion --, to the sighting of their southern home, and finally the quiet of sleep after the long journey.

Autumnal

Composer:
Marilyn Bliss
Instrumentation freestyle:
Flute, Clarinet, Cello, Piano

Ensemble Type

Autumnal, for flute, clarinet, cello, and piano, was written in 1991 on commission from the flutist James Zellers. It begins quietly, introspectively, with a symmetrical pitch structure that, if left alone, would endlessly repeat itself; a note of dissonance is at last introduced to open up the piece and allow it to go forward. In its consequent adventures the piece begins to dance, at first gracefully, but eventually ecstatically, instruments competing and racing against each other until the clarinet cries out for a halt, not able to continue. The opening material returns, now imbued with meaning not previously evident, and, in a coda, the piece evaporates.
