The free-flowing melodic lines of the first movement are built around the notes of the Lydian mode. The meditative middle movement quotes from the Medieval Chant for the Dead, Dies Irae. The work closes with a mysterious Toccata movement that summarizes mystical tone and chiaroscuro textures that permeate the work.
